Stewarding Broadway’s Malls. For Neighbors, Visitors, and You.
For more than thirty years, the Broadway Mall Association has stewarded the upkeep of our malls. The malls are integral to Broadway’s grand character, and we are honored to continue building the ever-changing character of a historic street. We enhance the malls’ beauty through plantings — native plants and seasonal flora — maintain the benches so neighbors and visitors alike can sit and relax, and create seasonal displays, including our annual Winter Lighting and the tulips that greet us each spring. We have also installed tree guards along Broadway on the Upper West Side to protect the health of the trees.
Through these efforts, we aim to ensure that the malls remain neighborhood spaces amid the bustle of Broadway.
Winter Lighting
Each year, BMA lights up as many Broadway malls as possible with energy-efficient LED lights, bringing warmth and brightness to the darkest months of the year. The lighting up of the malls not only makes them more welcoming and festive but also contributes to safety when the sun sets earlier and neighborhood streets grow darker.
Our annual winter lighting ceremony brings together BMA supporters, community members, and elected officials to celebrate the season, with holiday music from the Reaching for the Arts choir.
This seasonal tradition is a highlight for BMA and for our community; it is fully supported by community members and local businesses. We invite you to join the effort and sponsor a mall or donate to help keep Broadway shining all winter long.
Sherman Square Restoration
In 2025, with support from Sherwood Equities, BMA restored Sherman Square — a triangle park at 70th Street and Broadway. As a gateway to the Upper West Side, the project focused on revitalizing a highly visible, well-used space to make it more welcoming and cared for.
The restoration included:
- Installing tree guards to protect and support healthy growth
- Adding planters to frame the space
- Renewing the central plantings that had been heavily neglected
Together, these improvements transformed Sherman Square into a greener, more inviting place for neighbors and visitors alike.
