BMA Interacting with Our Community this April

Happy Spring! Tulips and other spring bulbs are in bloom from March to early May. Our seasonal planting in mid-May will be when we plant annuals and will flower until November.

Columbia University Gardening Club

On April 11th, BMA hosted the Columbia University Gardening Club. They helped plant trees and shrubs on 106th Street. The students did amazing work, making a real difference in the neighborhood.

Harlem Walk & Talk

On April 18th, BMA participated in the public event sponsored by New Yorkers for Parks to spotlight Harlem’s parks system, including accomplishments, issues, and opportunities. The event was designed to drive attention to local advocacy issues and amplify the Play Fair Coalition’s Parks 2030 Platform at a critical time in the city’s budget cycle. BMA is a member of the Play Fair Coalition and we are thrilled to be sharing our best practices with other community-driven parks organizations in Harlem.

Clearview Festival Local Street Fair

On April 18th, BMA also participated at the Clearview Festival local street fair. Say “Hi!” to Dana, one of our amazing staff members, tabling our event!

April Volunteer Day

On April 25th, BMA held our first monthly volunteer day. During the event, we planted the following native plants: Yarrow, Penstemon, Carex, and Panicum.

This work directly contributed to The Great Green Way initiative, where we are restoring all 83 malls from 70th to 168th Street with native plants. These plants attract pollinators, support biodiversity, develop deep root systems that prevent erosion, improve water infiltration, store carbon, and add organic matter.

We also participated in the City Nature Challenge by taking and uploading photos to iNaturalist. Volunteers were able to receive a City Scientist kit at this event. A big thank you to our volunteers!
