Green Matters

What becomes of a years worth of collected fallen leaves in a Manhattan cemetery?
They are turned and ground to decompose into nutrient rich compost.

What happens to the compost?
It gets delivered to and spread on the Broadway malls. In fact, all 300 cubic yards of compost was distributed to 65 malls in the fall of 2009 with the support and cooperation of the Trinity Church Cemetery. Recycling on a grand scale and the largest sustainability project undertaken by Broadway Mall Association.

Why is the compost so beneficial to the malls?
Compost contributes organic matter to the soil stimulating microorganisms and contributing nutrients to the soil such as nitrogen and phosphorus, essential for plant growth. Compost improves soil structure, which allows nutrients to reach plant roots and increases water retention in the soil.
