Habitat Enhancement

The Broadway Malls may be a narrow corridor of parkland, however they are capable of providing a functioning refuge for the abundant wildlife of NYC. We are planting thousands of native plants on our malls at 150th and 153rd, selecting the species most valued by New York’s diverse number of pollinators, birds, and bats.

The Malls are in a critical space between Riverside Park on the west and central park on the east, with connectivity to several northern Manhattan Parks. By enhancing the habitat value of the malls, we are creating an ecological corridor that will allow for the movement of desired species through the region, aiding in efforts to conserve the ever dwindling pollinator and bat populations in the northeast.

150th Street Pollinator Garden

In the Spring 2024, Broadway Mall Association planted a new pollinator garden with the help of local volunteers. The plants chosen for this mall are native and appeal to pollinators like butterflies and bees. If you are interested in volunteering, keep checking back for updates, or email info@broadwaymall.org to subscribe to our newsletter!

BMA is grateful to the individuals and local businesses who made the transformation of this mall possible. We encourage others to contribute funds for the care and sustainability of this landscape and others along Broadway.

153rd Street Bat Sanctuary

In addition to making the malls a great space for pollinators, we hope to continue to preserve biodiversity by taking advantage of our greenspace to provide a sanctuary for the bats who dwell in Manhattan. We will be working with the Gotham Bat Conservancy to install a Bat House in this mall.
