Morningside Heights is the academic capital of New York City, featuring Columbia University, Barnard College, Manhattan School of Music, Union Theological Seminary, Teachers College and Bank Street College of Education. Columbia University is one of the most prestigious universities in the United States, as a leading Ivy League institution with world-class faculty and leading research initiatives.
The Cathedral of St. John the Divine awes residents and visitors alike as the largest Gothic Cathedral in the world. Construction on this cathedral began 133 years ago and continues to this day, mirroring the centuries-long construction of the great medieval cathedrals.
Union army hero Ulysses S. Grant was laid to rest in Morningside Heights, at what is now called the General Grant National Memorial. Grant’s final resting place, which also holds his wife, Julia, is the largest mausoleum in North America with a history of over 130 years.
Riverside Church is another landmark of Morningside Heights, with its nearly 100-year history. Civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous “Beyond Vietnam” sermon from this church, leading anti-war initiatives.
