One of New York City’s largest historic districts, the Upper West Side is home to some of the city’s most magnificent and architecturally charming buildings—The Dakota, the Apthorp, San Remo, the Ansonia, the Beresford and the El Dorado, among many others.

The Upper West Side also boasts two of New York’s most renowned museums: the American Museum of Natural History and The New-York Historical Society, the city’s first established museum. Both institutions draw in millions of visitors every year and feature special exhibitions showcasing different parts of the city and natural world.

Lincoln Center, located just south of 70th Street, is another major epicenter for students and young professionals. The Juilliard School, on West 65th Street & Broadway, is one of the most regarded conservatories for music, drama, and dance.

Originally the location of the villages of Harsenville and Bloomingdale, the area was essentially open country in the 18th century, dotted with farms and country estates. By the early 20th century, the area was framed by Riverside Park and Central Park. Brownstones were constructed on many of the numbered streets, and along the avenues, Manhattan’s characteristic high rise luxury buildings made their first appearance.
